Courtney Love wasn’t the only dysfunctional one in Hole. Hit So Hard: The Life & Near Death Story Of Patty Schemel documents how their drummer spent the best part of a decade trying to drink and drug herself to death.
It also “examines her experiences as an out lesbian and one of rock’s rare female drummers, the history of Hole, and her friendship with Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain who feature in previously unseen home videos”.
Other familiar faces who crop up include Phranc, Debbi Peterson from The Bangles, Roddy Bottum (no sniggering at the back!) and former Go-Go Gina Schock who all attest to how off her gicker their friend was during her grunge odyssey.
Having been picked up by “LGBT-centric” UK distributor Peccadillo Pictures, Hit So Hard will screen for one-night only in Dublin’s Light House Cinema on October 21. pattydoc.com has all the details.
The happy ending is that having gone to the dogs, Schemel is now working with them at a canine rescue centre in Los Angeles.
CITN is also very much liking One More For The Road, Mark O’Toole’s short film about much missed Dublin music emporium Road Records.
Along with co-founders Dave Kennedy and Julie Collins, there’s input from Dan Hegarty, Richie Egan, Glen Hansard, Paul McLoone, Adrian Crowley and Dave Fanning, to name just six. You’ll find this very fine doc on YouTube.
YouTube is also the go-to place for Ze Suicide, an, if you will, rockumentary about former UK Subs drummer Steve Roberts who’s guaranteed a starring role if they ever decide to make a punk Spinal Tap. The highly affable sticksman cuts a sad figure as he explains how he’s gone from appearing alongside U2 on Top Of The Pops to working at ASDA.
