A STAR IS REBORN – SORT OF!

Colm O Hare, 25 Oct 2012

No, it’s not some ironic, post-modern indie outfit, naming themselves after the Broadway/movie star. Rather this is a collection from Babs herself, featuring 11 unreleased tracks from the vaults, going back to the early ‘60s.

With an emphasis on the hipper pop songwriters of the day, selections here include Jimmy Webb’s ballad ‘Didn’t We’, recorded in 1970 for unreleased album project The Singer and a poignant version of Randy Newman’s ‘I Think It’s Going Rain Today’ – complete with Newman himself on piano. Other highlights include the standard ‘Willow Weep For Me’, an unreleased studio version of ‘With One More Look At You’ from the soundtrack of her hit movie A Star Is Born and a version of ‘Home’ (from The Wiz), all performed to perfection by Streisand. Of Irish interest (or should that be Oirish?) is 'How Are Things In Glocca Morra? from Finian's Rainbow-apparently on of John F. Kennedy's favourite songs!
