Adam Clayton's former PA jailed for seven years

The mother-of-two was sentenced today.

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 06 Jul 2012

Having been found guilty last month of stealing €2.8 million from his bank accounts, Adam Clayton’s former assistant, Carol Hawkins, was today sentenced to seven years in jail.

“These were crimes rooted in greed and nothing else,” Judge McCartan remarked. “Nothing can explain the level of dishonesty other than the pursuit of a lavish lifestyle that was no responsibility of Mr. Clayton’s.”

Pilfered over a four-year period, the money was spent on buying 22 racehorses, college courses for her children and a range of luxury items.

In a bitter irony for Ms. Hawkins, she was driven from court in a prison van marked with the number ‘U2’.

There was more bad news today for Leonard Watters, the unemployed dance teacher who last year falsely accused Louis Walsh of molesting him in a Dublin nightclub toilet.

Already serving six-months, Judge Katherine Delahunt gave Watters an additional five months, suspended on condition that he enters an alcohol rehabilitation programme.
