Jack L for Nua: Féile By The River
He'll be showcasing The 27 Club...
The Hot Press Newsdesk, 20 Aug 2012
Jack L is the headline turn on September 15 at the free Nua: Féile By The River all-dayer that’s taking place on The Strand as part of the Newbridge 200 celebrations.
That night also finds Anuna performing in St. Conleth’s Church with emerging local talent getting its chance to shine on September 7 and 14 in The Avenue where the musical action takes place between 4pm and 9pm.
The boy Lukeman will be dipping into his new show, The 27 Club, which features the music of Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Robert Johnson, Echo & The Bunnymen, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix and others who went to meet their rock ‘n’ roll maker at that age.
Macabre? Yes, but there’s always been something of the night about Jack!

Jack L’s ambitions appear to have shrunk a little in recent times – seemingly resigned to the fact that he’ll never be seen as Ireland’s spiritual heir to Scott Walker (or Tom Waits), he has settled for making records that appeal to folks who find the Divine Comedy a little too feisty. Not necessarily a bad thing: ‘Chocolate Eyes’ is a pretty-but-inconsequential AOR ballad, which contains the telling line “I gave up on dreams / and regrets”. Never fear, Jack – now that you’re aiming lower, you’re actually hitting closer to the mark.

An all-too-average song from a man who is capable of so much better. At this point in his career, Jack L. needs a show-stopper of a tune to bring his undoubted gifts to a wider audience: ‘So Far Gone’ will hardly be the one to do so.

Unencumbered by the fickleness of fashion, Jack Lukeman (or Jack L, as he is better known) has carved out his own niche in the melting pot that is music in the '90s. He has left the shade of Brel behind and has followed his own vision, which still has its roots in the romantic balladry of Scott Walker, Nick Cave and Frank Sinatra.
