"Junkie Xl's mix is sacrilege"
David Holmes gets precious about 'A Little Less Conversation', as done by one of his favourite artists of all time
While David Holmes may have picked the orginal version of ‘A Little Less Conversation’ for the Ocean’s Eleven soundtrack, he is not a fan of the chart-topping Junkie XL revamp.
“I think what they did with that twelve inch is complete fucking sacrilege,” he spits. “It is absolute rubbish. Obviously, I love the song. The reason I chose the original for Ocean’s Eleven is that it’s got an amazing fat drum break at the start that sounds really contemporary. And I don’t mind the ad. It’s a good advert and the use of music in it is good, but the new version itself is awful. Still, it’s great to see Elvis get more number ones than The Beatles!”
Elvis has been a central influence for Holmes over an entire lifetime.
“I grew up with Elvis’ music,” he states. “‘Wonder Of You’ is probably the first song I ever heard. That’s the thing about Irish working class families back then. There was no shortage of great music. The Beach Boys, The Stones, The Who, The Carpenters, The Beatles – it was all around you.
"It’s impossible to pick a favourite Elvis track. It’s probably still ‘A Little Less Conversation’.
Then there is the live version of ‘Memory’ which is amazing. ‘Suspicious Minds’... It’s hard not to be obvious when it comes to picking the best of Elvis. There’s really too many to say.”
