Ghosts
Country n'soul rock with a vulnerable side
A couple of yankee hipsters produce some muscular country ‘n’ soul-infused hardcore rock, with touches of sensitive Morrissey-ish vulnerability in the vocals and drum-beats designed for dancing. Why’s it good? Maybe it’s the way the straight four-to-the flour riffage seems to be contradicted and undermined by the quivering, elasticated, over-emotional lead vocals. Or perhaps it’s because the song titles (‘Robots Can Fuck Your Shit Up’ and ‘Why Can’t I Grow A Beard’), themes, and the call and response contradictions (on songs like ‘We Wear Mittens’), indicate they don’t take themselves very seriously. One way or another the whole package is fierce charming. And the first track ‘O Shot’ is destined to be an indie-disco staple.
Key Track: ‘O Shot’
