Kid British, cheerful nu-ska madness-sampling pop masterclass
Despite the really crap band name and even shittier album title, Kid British’s brand of nu-ska is anything but. Boasting Madness samples (‘Our House Is Dadless’) and a cheery disposition (we’ll forgive them for that) their debut is a pop masterclass. It Was This Or Football meshes The Specials together with Dizzee Rascal, taking old-school sounds and presenting them with a new-school attitude. At times the breezy nature can get tiring (‘Sunny Day’ sounds like the theme tune for The Tweenies) but when Kid British are on the money (‘Elizabeth’, ‘Rum Boys’) they seem to make the stars shine a little brighter.
