A perfect mix of U2’s One beats the original on Today FM
The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show’s Beat the Original competition on Today FM, ended this morning with Perfect Mix’s version of U2’s ‘One’ taking the title for 2009 following a public vote.
Perfect Mix comprise Ronan Brennan, Conal Early, Brian Garvin, Garry O’Meara and Conor Smith. Three members were in Iceland and Holland, listening on-line to Today FM, when they were announced as winners. Ronan spoke to Ian from Iceland and said, “We’re absolutely delighted to have won the competition. All the other entries played on the show this week were great.” he band will receive €5,000 from sponsors Ovi by Nokia.
Beat the Original, sponsored by Ovi by Nokia, and now in its third year, invited singer/songwriters, bands, budding musicians and established artists to record U2’s ‘One’ … and Beat the Original. Hundreds entries arrived, and The Breakfast Show panel of experts, Emma Harney of Entertainment Architects, Today FM’s Tony Fenton and Jackie Hayden of Hot Press, who signed U2 to their first record contract back in 1979, chose five recordings to go to the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show’s listeners vote.
Ian commented on Beat the Original 2009, “The standard of entries this year was phenomenal. We had such a diverse range of recordings, it’s amazing what people can do from their front room! Perfect Mix is a ‘perfect’ example of how you can take a song and completely change the rhythm, tone and feel of a classic tune.”
