They were the great new hopes of Irish rock. Until, with their second album in the can, they decided to, er, call it a day. Thankfully, Delorentos have changed their mind and are about to step back into the fray with new LP You Can Make Sound. Hot Press joins them for a contemplative walk by the sea.
Energetic, angular indie stylings and melodic, hook-tastic tunes are the order of the night. The band give a tight, flawless performance hinging on the formidable front pairing of Ronan and Kieran, whose sparring guitars and vocal harmonies are the act’s secret ingredient.

As with everything they’ve put their name to, this screams quality, conviction and promise. New Irish band of the year? Look out Ham Sambo, there could be a battle on the horizon.
Dublin band most likely Delorentos whet appetites with this thrilling taster for their debut album. ‘The Rules’ posits a sweetly naive collision of swaggering riffs and almost but not quite emo choruses. Too much hype may already have dulled their appeal – it’s ominous when you’re sick of a band not yet on their first record. For now, though, Delorentos are bright young things to watch.

Over the past six months Delorentos have found themselves in the not entirely enviable position of being tipped as the next big thing before they’d released a single note of music. Thus their debut EP finally arrives with great expectations. Fortunately, it’s a case of happy endings all round as the Dublin four piece pass their first test with flying colours. Indeed, you’d be hard pressed to recognise this as anything but the work of a band at the top of their game. Every aspect exudes pure confidence. The only possible worry, in fact, is that, with its twisted guitar riffs and awkward beats, they could find themselves tied a little too closely to the whole Franz / Bloc / Futureheads thing. Some lead, most follow and Delorentos are heading for the front.
They may look after Lambchop’s pets and occasionally leg it from Crawdaddy to catch the last train home, but when not partaking in such hi-jinks, Dublin quartet Delorentos are busy trying to kick rock music another rung up the evolutionary ladder.
When Delorentos came on stage everything seemed to fall into place. Although they’re clearly influenced by the current Brit Pop new wave, Franz Ferdinand et al, and are not wholly original, they do conjure undeniably sharp riffs and tight rhythms. They’re also great fun to watch.
