The Roses
So Reni has gone home from the tour according to Ian Brown - will they get a replacement in or is that it...again.

by the way, it was the fact that I don't have tickets to this that made me start complaining about the weather. Yesterday evening I was feeling somewhat smug that I hadn't gone for it, what with the winter upon us and all, but then today made me start thinking it could be great.

so how was it?
 From : davidlynch Posted : 06/07/12 at 03:09
Quite good ,prob a 7.5/10

Great renditions of Made of Stone, I am the ressurection( last song) and This is the one were the highlights, I wanna be adored and sally cinnamon were v good too.

Browns voice was weak in parts especially in song for my sugar spin sister, bye bye badman, while he hardly set a word bar nice one to the crowd, vocals were low too mostly drowned out by the crowd singing lyrics and even guitar lines.

Squire was great as was reni.

Looked like at least 60,000 people in that field to me,a mudbath at the end,if anyone is going on sat/sun they definetly need wellies with more rain forecast between now and then.

Lots were complaining about the bar queues and the early closure at 9.50.

Heard it was great from one, and good from another so has to have been decent all right!

Ye must be glad that today's rain hadn't arrived though.

Any of the supports shine?
 From : smithrob Posted : 06/07/12 at 13:06
Excellent set. Brown was flat in parts but the crowd sang louder than he did. Squire was brilliant, Mani was in top form and Reni is still the genius that he is. Plays drums like a lead guitarist. Flawless.
Set list was fairly magic. Hearing Somethings Burning and Bye Bye Badman was a REAL treat for me. I'd give it 8/10.

Looking forward to seeing em in Belfast next month.

are you going to have gone to 3 gigs by the end of the tour?

the good reports are making me think of going to sziget.
 From : smithrob Posted : 06/07/12 at 13:43
Was looking into Sziget. Your euro can go far over there. Decided against it - Belfast here i come.
As for supports last night, I caught the end of The Minutes - top class rock n roll as usual. Justice Tonight were brilliant. Good to see John Power up there as well as a cameo from Shane MacGowan. And the Wailers was an hour of Bob Marley tunes - cant go wrong.

The playing on Fools Gold was great, and I Am The Resurrection was sublime too. Thought the singing was amazingly poor on This Is The One. Glad to have seen them live though.
 From : skennedy Posted : 09/07/12 at 12:54
"amazingly poor"... shouldn't really have been THAT amazed, I suppose...

I think we're all glad that you qualified that comment. ;-)

(No chance getting any emoticons around here, I suppose?]

'Twas far from emoticons ye were reared...

I thought Brown's vocals on Don't Stop were far too flat - even by his standards. But generally, the people around me were singing every line. Reni's harmonies on Shoot You Down. Sweet.

If anyone wants to catch the Roses in Belfast at the Tennants Vital festival alonside Florence + Machine and Rodrigo y Gabriela, tickets still available here for £49. Should be good. Personally I cant wait and wish it was on tomorrow.
 From : skennedy Posted : 10/07/12 at 11:08
Rob, I was arguing with my friends about how bad the vocals were on 'Don't Stop' - but they said I couldn't use that as a weapon in the discussion because it's a backwards song. But it was funny to hear. The band did a great job playing it though.

Any info on transport for the Belfast gig? I don't fancy staying the night if I can help it.
 From : smithrob Posted : 11/07/12 at 17:51
Yeah, Dont Stop is a backwards song. But still sung in key on the record. Just pops in and out of time in places. Actually, those Chemical Brothers said on numerous occasions that its their favourite chooooon.

Transport for Belfast gig? The last Belfast - Dublin train is at 8pm. I dont think the Roses will even be onstage at that time. There might be some special bus services arranged but nothing is on the website yet http://tennentsvital.com/travel/info/
You're probably better off staying the night. The festival site is only about 3 miles from the city centre and after doing some research, it seems hotels aren't too expensive at all (same can't be said for Manchester hotels during the Heaton Park weekend, thats for sure!)
