Since their debut, Tourist History, was released in 2010, few bands have pierced the national and international consciousness quite as effectively as Two Door Cinema Club.
Turn on any TV show, film, Playstation game or advert and you’re likely to hear the up-beat sun kissed melodies of the three boys from Co. Down. In 2012, they released their not particularly difficult second album, Beacon, which went straight to No. 1. Fast-forward four months and they’re in Dublin at the start of their most ambitious tour to date.
The Cast Of Cheers and Jape do a wonderful job in support, but ultimately, the night belongs to one band. They open, lights flashing dramatically, with ‘Sleep Alone’, which segues into a meaty, big and bouncy ‘Undercover Martyn’.
It speaks volumes for the chaps’ songwriting that they can play eighteen tracks from two albums, without a filler amongst them. They find a way to juxtapose the careless party tunes of the first album with the slightly more contemplative numbers on their second record. ‘Something Good Can Work’ and ‘Sun’ are obvious stand-outs but there’s never a dull moment throughout.
Curiously, there’s no attempt at between song banter or consciously establishing a rapport between themselves and the audience. They simply whizz along, from one indiepop cracker to the next, backed by a choir of 8,000 teenage girls. It touches the core, like happiness bottled.
By the time they’re done, it would be nearly impossible to remain aloof from the general euphoria. Two Door Cinema Club are ready to move up to the next level. Don’t be surprised if they’ve broken America before the year is through.
