Satellite EP

This is the first release from The Radio since their debut album Kindness in 2004. The title track 'Satellite' is an upbeat tune featuring the signature breathy female vocals that characterise their songs. Gentle harmonies and a catchy melody layered over a punchy beat make this a lovely summer track. In places, particularly on their more subdued tracks, they sound a lot like American quirky rock outfit The Eels, minus the underlying darkness. The Radio make subtly pretty songs and can really shine when they want to, as the title track on this EP demonstrates.

Manmade

Singer Stephen M’s past in Rollerskate Skinny is nearly always referred to in articles about The Radio. And now the band have something else to add to their biog: the inclusion of ‘Whatever Gets You Through Today’ on the Grey’s Anatomy soundtrack. The Radio’s second single ‘Manmade’ from their second album Charm Offensive is a fantastic upbeat song, and should repeat the commercial success of ‘Whatever...’.

One Of Two Ways

The common view is that making throwaway pop music is a piece of cake, which is probably right unless you’re looking to produce something that will stand the test of time beyond two and a half minutes. The Radio fall into that trap, clearly trying to come up with something both light and substantial but ‘One Of Two Ways’ is just too flimsy, not helped by a complete lack of bottom end to the production.

The Radio live at The Village, Dublin

The Radio look a lot more compelling and fully-formed than they sound. There’s those four axe-wielders strung across the front of the stage, clad all in black, along with two stunning female singers, flanked by two slightly more intense fellas. Visually, it’s intriguing. But tonight’s performance lacks both the conviction and sense of implacable cool necessary to provide the look with the correct context.
