Dresden Dolls singer Amanda Palmer broke her foot yesterday after she was hit by a car; but the determined singer still managed to play a stunner in Auntie Annie's that night.
At 2pm on Sunday afternoon (September 28), Vaudeville-inspired vixen Amanda Palmer crossed a busy road in Belfast while checking her emails on her i-phone. So far, so good you might think, but unfortunately for the Dresden Dolls star, she was under the impression that in the UK and Ireland we drive on the same side of the road as the Yanks and ultimately found herself knocked down by a car, breaking her big toe and three metatarsals in her right foot.
The shocked driver (a 20-year-old woman) immediately took the fallen singer to Belfast City hospital, where Amanda stayed for two excruciating hours after being interviewed by the local cops. Insisting that she would still play the second night of her tour later on in Auntie Annie’s even if it meant she were in a wheel-chair, the vocalist hobbled onstage at 10pm propped up by crutches and, by her own admission, was on enough pain-killers to down Wolf from the Gladiators.
“I had an accident today,” said Palmer. “I did what most stupid Americans do and walked on the wrong side of the road and ended up getting run over. I have to say I’m very grateful for the free health care that you have in Northern Ireland and that this is the first show I’ve played where I’m completely on drugs.”
Earlier that day, Amanda also managed to play a guerrilla gig outside of City Hall for all of her under-age fans who couldn’t get into the over 18’s show. 30 teenagers flocked round her as she sang four songs accompanied by a ukulele before being marched off the grounds by local jobsworths. “Apparently it’s illegal to gather in groups of more than 12,” laughed her band-mate Steven Mitchell-Wright. “We were a bit annoyed we had to leave but with Amanda walking around with her leg in a cast we were probably better off calling it a day.”
In a somewhat spooky twist of events, the singer is currently touring her debut solo album, Who Killed Amanda Palmer. In light of Sunday’s events, we’re guessing she probably wished she called it I Sold Lots of Records and Got Free Pizza Every Day instead.
