Navan a laugh

This fortnight sees Navan funnyman Tommy Tiernan hit Dublin, Derry and Armagh as part of his ongoing Irish tour.

Maeve Heslin, 16 Jun 2011

Fans of Meath comedian Tommy Tiernan will be spoilt for choice this fortnight, as the official King of Controversy continues his nationwide tour.

Tiernan, who got many a pair of knickers in a twist following an interview with this parish’s Olaf Tyaransen in the Hot Press Chatroom at EP two years ago, will stop off in three counties this fortnight – Dublin’s Vicar St. on June 16, 17, 24 and 25, Derry’s Millemiun Forum (18, 19), and the Market Place Theatre and Arts Centre in Armagh (22, 23).

If Tommy T ain’t your cup of er, tea – fear not, there’s plenty more live comedy gigs happening around this fair nation over the next 14 days! The always excellent Katherine Lynch (she of RTÉ’s Wonderwomen fame) takes her show The Hack Of Ya on the road too. Lynch will play as part of Cork’s Live At The Marquee series on June 18, then head west for a show in the TF Royal Theatre in Mayo (25). Scarleh for her!

Meanwhile, former Hoot Press interviewee Patrick Combs continues travelling around the country with his Man 1, Bank 0 show. Combs deposited a fake cheque into an American bank, but somehow managed to hang on to the cash. Here, the motivational speaker and author imparts his words of wisdom! Catch him at Hearn’s Hotel, Tipperary on June 16, the Backstage Theatre in Longford (17), Monaghan’s Iontas Theatre (18), the Birr Theatre and Arts Centre (23), Dún Laoghaire’s Pavilion (22, 24), Galway’s Town House and Courthouse (25), the Solstice Arts Centre in Meath (26), and finally, the Dunamaise Arts Centre in Laois (29).

Those who prefer their comedy off-the-cuff should head along to The Mercantile in Dublin, as every Wednesday, rap improv – ‘rimprov’ if you will (their word not mine!) – duo The Inquizition (AKA Jonathan Farrelly and Gordon Rochford) perform every week. The talented pair don their finest fur coats and gold medallions for a completely improvised rap set based on suggestions from the audience. Shy and retiring types be warned – there’s interaction a-plenty at this one!
