Tommy Tiernan, Shane McGowan, Eamonn McCann and others commemorate Allen Ginsberg

On the 50th anniversary of the first reading of his epic poem Howl, a host of celebrities such as Shane McGowan, Tommy Tiernan, Theo Dorgan, Eamonn McCann, Tony Curtis, Dermod Moore and BP Fallon will commemorate the work of the legendary Beat artist, Allen Ginsberg.

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 16 Dec 2005

Ginsberg (1926 - 1977) was the first Beat writer to gain popular notice when he delivered a memorable performance of his new poem, Howl at the now legendary Six Gallery poetry reading in October 1955.

The reading was publicised by an obscenity charge that made Ginsberg a worldwide symbol of 'sexual depravity' - as homosexuality was perceived then.

At Thursday January 5 2006 at the Sugar Club, Dublin, Tommy Tiernan will read the epic poem. He'll be joined by the aforementioned cast of enthusiasts who'll read more of his work, along with personal recollections and thoughts of Ginsberg and his visits to Ireland.

Tickets for the show, taking place in association with Hot Press, are on sale now through Ticketmaster and usual outlets for €25 plus booking fee. All proceeds on the night go to the Dublin branch of Down Syndrome Ireland.
