Set around 100 years before the Westerosi drama with which the world and its mother is now familiar, this is actually a series of novellas, following the adventures of Duncan The Tall and his squire Egg – the boy who would become King Aegon Targaryen. For fans of the blockbuster novels and TV series, there’s plenty to entertain.
The book works as both a look back at the roots of the divisions in the Seven Kingdoms, as well as an insight into some characters who go on to become mythological figures in the saga.
More pleasing, though, is Martin’s writing. One of the reasons for the enduring success of his work is the ability to create a living, breathing world, something largely achieved by a focus on characters and relationships rather than the fantastic. That mastery is again on display here.
If you’re getting a little impatient for Season Six, then this will tide you over nicely.
