Nice drama flick fails to grab attention.
Hugh Dancy puts in a good show as a young man with Asperger Syndrome whose life is transformed when he hooks up with prepossessing neighbour, Rose Byrne. Erm. And that’s it really. In a nutshell.
Max Mayer’s slender, low key dramedy can’t quite escape the minefield of TV movie cliches. This is Illness of the Week fodder; our titular hero and his stereotyped obsessions with space and electronic engineering might have been drawn from a Wikipedia stub. Unhappily, this is more than enough research to elevate Mr. Mayer’s work above the cutsey-pie Rain Man standard.
A baffling subplot involving Peter Gallagher as Ms. Byrne’s roguish white-collar criminal dad does little to diminish the Hallmark vibe. But good intentions and better performances work to save the day. Just about.
