Vintage effort from celebrated Irish singer-songwriter.
Gavin James is back with his third studio album, The Sweetest Part. On it, he delivers 13 tracks suffused in the Irish singer-songwriter’s signature brand of heart-wrenching lyricism. And it works. Chronicling the painful, universal experience of falling in love and meeting eventual heartbreak, James’ powerful and soulful voice lends itself perfectly to this collection of emotionally charged, radio-ready hits.
Gavin has a knack for compelling love ballads. Embracing it, opening track ‘Only Love’ features James’ melodic, electronically altered vocals, layered over a subtle synth accompaniment. ‘End Of The World’ feels like an essential summer sound, with its high energy tempo and atmospheric beats. Teaser ‘Jealous’ reinforces the former busker’s reputation for sad songs, as its sentimental piano melody and crescendoing chorus explore the emotional journey when a former flame moves on.
‘I’ve Got You’ has a sweeter, softer sound as Gavin muses over the prospect of a relationship’s future with cheerful, charming lyrics: “Tell our great granddaughters not to rush to get older/ Hope they grow and be just like you.” The addition of the joyful chorus of ‘lalalas’ makes it a sure-fire singalong favourite, ready-made for his upcoming Irish headline tour.
Elsewhere, the pared-down title-track – written and produced by James and Kodaline guitarist Mark Prendergast – emerges as a standout, its soft acoustic guitar making for a smooth, easy listening and highly enjoyable experience. One for fans of Gavin James to savour...
