This comes amidst the controversy sparked by Gregg's vegan sausage roll launched last week.
Aldi has announced today that it will bulk up the number of vegetarian options on its shelves by stocking Kelly's Vegetarian pudding from January 10th.
The pudding is being added to Aldi's range with both the vegetarian and health conscious community in mind. Speaking of its inclusion in the supermarket, Sean Kelly of Kelly's Butchers said, “we are delighted that Kelly’s Vegetarian Pudding will now be available across the country at Aldi Stores. This is a high protein low-fat product which is very popular with health-conscious people and those watching their weight”. With a website featuring a comprehensive guide to vegetarian and vegan diets, including product ranges, recipes and links, Aldi is one in a long line of stores who are becoming increasingly attuned to the demand for more meat-free, sustainable options.
Other chains launching improved vegetarian and vegan ranges include Marks and Spencers, Tesco, and most controversially, Gregg's, who launched a vegan sausage roll last week.
This sparked debate online, with Piers Morgan chiming in on Twitter before calling the chain out for so-called "gastronomic appropriation" on air.
The Good Morning Britain host spat the Vegan roll into a bin when he tried it on air before chastizing McDonald's and Pizza Hut for including similar meat-free options. He went on to confuse the aim of vegan/vegetarianism with a sole desire to "be healthy" and call for a ban on such foods using "meat phraseology" in Britain.
