Andrea Bocelli has revealed that he tested positive for Covid-19 at the end of March, but was fully recovered by the time he performed his emotional Music For Hope concert on April 12 in the Duomo di Milano.
Taking to Facebook last night, the opera star said: "The pandemic which has shaken the world has also affected – albeit mildly – me and certain members of my family. Out of respect for those for whom contracting the virus has had more serious consequences, I decided it would be best not to share the news. I certainly didn’t want to unnecessarily alarm my fans and also wished to protect my family’s privacy.
"We were fortunate enough to have a swift and full recovery by the end of March. Given the chance to donate blood to help find a cure for Covid, my response was an immediate 'yes'. A modest — but fundamental — gesture, through which I am playing my small part."
That prompted a massive outpouring of love from fans like Sharon Cate Davidson who replied: "When we went to your concert in February, you apologised for being sickly and not having your full voice. I have wondered this time since if you had the virus then. So glad you have recovered. Take care!"
Despite going through a family Covid crisis herself, Mary Skrypnk Lutz, messaged: "Praying for you, your family and all of those affected by the covid virus as well. My mom was diagnosed last week; she’ll be 90 on Friday. She’s a fighter; we’re keeping the faith! Stay Safe! God Bless."
Adds Ann Phillips: "I completely understand your decision to not share the news. Thank you for sharing now and thank you also for donating blood. I know that plasma donation centers here in the US are now collecting plasma from people who have recovered from COVID-19."
