Paul Rudd charms in fun but underwhelming superhero flick
Ants are able to carry 50 times their body weight, we learn in Ant-Man. But can the latest Marvel outing support the crushing pressure of audience expectation?
Ant-Man is directed by Peyton Reed, best known for Bring It On, Down With Love, and The Break Up. Starring Paul Rudd as the titular and diminutive hero, this is an old-fashioned heist flick that will serve as a palette cleanser between the busy, deafening Avengers: Age Of Ultron and next year’s Captain America: Civil War.
If anything ruins the fun it is the unwelcome comedic elements. Instead of making the character darker, writers Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish crowbar in lots of mild jokes, which become increasingly underwhelming. On the evidence here, Ant-Man requires a workout before joining the superhero heavyweights.
