The release marks Aoife Nessa Frances' first single with Partisan Records, who recently added the singer to their roster.
Irish singer-songwriter Aoife Nessa Frances has shared a mesmerising, atmospheric new single 'Emptiness Follows' — which comes with an announcement of an upcoming November headline tour.
A masterclass in psych-folk, 'Emptiness Follows' takes the deep rasp of Frances' voice and marries it with smoky, syncopated instrumentals. Simultaneously invoking the shadowy backroom of a 40s jazz club and the swirling visuals of a kaleidoscope, the interspersed harp and consistent keys creates an effect that is highly visceral, and deeply unique.
The single marks the first release since the singer's 2020, critically acclaimed album Land of No Junction, and is also the first taste from Frances since being signed to Partisan Records — who recently added her to their roster alongside Fontaines DC, Just Mustard, IDLES and Cigarettes After Sex.
"'Emptiness Follows' is about the intimacy and deep emotional connection of friendship. The song captures these moments — the water as the weight of the emotional connection we share, the small details we remember: ‘the shape sits beneath your earlobe,'" said Frances about the track.
"The movement and colour of the music, the harp constantly flowing throughout, are emphasising a profound importance in acknowledging an eternal kind of love. I wanted my voice to be close and up front and vulnerable like Serge Ginsberg’s Histoire de Melody Nelson."

Paired with a video, the visuals invoke a 60s experimental film — depicting flowing fabrics, bodies painted gold and the Irish country with roving, superimposed images of flowers dancing across the screen. Shot in Kinsale, Co. Cork, the video combines closed darkness with the bright open sea, creating something simultaneously disarming and intriguing.
"The video for 'Emptiness Follows' emulates an impressionistic vision of memories," explained video director Zoe Greenway. "The juxtaposition of light and dark imagery replicates a feeling of fragmented remembrances. The evocative visual textures explore the distorted yet halcyon nature of memory."
Having spent the last two years in the west of Ireland working on new music, 'Emptiness Follows,' is an indicator of what's to come, showcasing the singer's commitment to creating unconventional sonic spaces.
The single release came in step with a UK tour announcement, which will bring the singer to several cities in November. Tickets for the tour will go on sale Wednesday, May 11 at 10 am.
