"I have to play it safe at the moment," said wayward chef and entrepreneur Conrad Gallagher in a Hot Press interview last September. "Not much messing around this year." How poignant an instance of speaking too soon, can you get?
"I have to play it safe at the moment. I have to because everyone’s looking at me. Not doing much messing around this year." So said Conrad Gallagher, celeb chef and proprietor of a series of increasingly glitzy restaurants, in an interview with Hot Press last September: for despite his great gift ("I can think of a dish, write a recipe, test it, and I wouldn’t be as much as a teaspoon out"), he had, by late 2001, become far better known for his financial difficulties and extravagant lifestyle than his cooking. The safe-playing simple life he was attempting must not have agreed with him however: he dodged a court appearance (again) this week and there is currently a warrant out for his arrest.
