The 2020 IFTA Academy Awards have announced the nominations for this year's ceremony, which will be held virtually in September.

Ireland’s most prestigious TV and film awards ceremony will have no physical event until April 2021 at the earliest, organisers have confirmed.

Instead, a “bespoke virtual 2020 awards ceremony” is being organised for this autumn, with full details to be announced at a later date.

The Best Film category has been split into two - Film 2019 and Film 2020 - while some other categories expanded from four to six nominees to include more nominees from the past two years.

Element Pictures and BBC Three hit series Normal People did not make the deadline for this year’s awards and will be part of 2021's ceremony instead.

Irish language Great Famine drama Arracht received 11 nominations, followed by Roddy Doyle-written homelessness drama Rosie with 9.

A Bump Along the Way, Arracht, Calm with Horses, Extra Ordinary, Ordinary Love, Black '47, Float Like a Butterfly, The Dig, The Hole in the Ground and Rosie comprise the Best Film 2019 and 2020 categories.

Cillian Murphy, Saoirse Ronan, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, Liam Cunningham, Barry Keoghan and Andrew Scott are some of the big names leading the shortlist of nominees.

Jessie Buckley (Wild Rose), Aisling Franciosi (The Nightingale), Bronagh Gallagher (A Bump Along The Way), Sarah Greene (Rosie), Seána Kerslake (The Hole In The Ground) and Saoirse Ronan for her take of Jo in Little Women make up the Best Actress in a Lead Role Film category.

Within the Actor in a Lead Role Film category, Dara Devaney (Finky), Moe Dunford (The Dig), Liam Neeson (Ordinary Love), Dónall Ó Héalaí (Arracht), Tom Vaughan Lawlor (Rialto) and Barry Ward (Extra Ordinary) each picked up a nod.

IFTA Chief Executive, Áine Moriarty stated that: “This year’s Nominations showcase to the world what Ireland’s small but excellent film and television community has to offer.

"These past few months have been difficult for so many, and we look forward to a time when Irish productions can resume and continue to bring powerful engaging stories to the screen”.
