Art of Algebra has released a new four-track EP, called 'Under a Different Light'. The EP was written and produced entirely during the weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown.
During the pandemic, producer David Hallinan (A.K.A. Art of Algebra) took advantage of the reduced opportunity to travel and socialise, and converted the free time into making new music.
As with Art of Algebra's 11 track debut album, ‘Under a Different Light’ is characterised by a diverse mix of styles and genres blending trip-hop, downtempo, dark ambient and experimental electronica.
The record continues to draw upon the same influences that have been key to shaping the Art of Algebra sound to date, such as Boards of Canada, Massive Attack, Rival Consoles and Four Tet. However, the EP also marks a new direction, with more emphasis on simplistic floating synthesizer textures coupled with a more acoustic and organic percussive sound.
The record explores themes of light and shade, and how these are expressed in musical tone. Rather than being luminous at times and simply dark at others, the record invites the listener to be equally comfortable in both its brighter and darker moments – never truly in the dark, but in the shade.
