The Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys has congratulated the playwright following the opening night of his acclaimed play, ‘King of the Castle’, at the Dublin Theatre Festival.
Minister Humphreys said: “I was delighted to attend the opening night of Eugene’s harrowing drama at Dublin Theatre Festival.
"This is the first major revival of his play in over 30 years, and it was wonderful to see him there on the night.
“The production, directed by Garry Hynes of Druid, has recently completed a hugely successful run in Galway.
"I would also like to congratulate Garry, her team at Druid, the cast and creative team, who presented an inspired interpretation of Eugene’s work.
“Eugene is a prolific writer, who was a man way ahead of his time in writing King of the Castle. He tackled topics that would have been highly controversial when the play was first performed in 1964.
“Eugene’s bravery and integrity as a writer have lived on over time. This was clear from the standing ovations that the Monaghan man’s play received at the Gaiety Theatre this week.”
