With 12 nominations, Olivia Colman’s film The Favourite leads the race at this year’s Bafta Awards nominations
Awards season is now well and truly in full swing. Just days after the Golden Globes offered upsets with Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book, Bafta have announced its nominees for 2019.
With 12 nominations, The Favourite is some way ahead of its nearest rivals A Star is Born, First Man, Roma, and controversial Globes winner Bohemian Rhapsody - each landing 7 nominations.
The news comes as a further feather in the cap for Element Pictures, the Irish production company. The Favourite marks the third collaboration between Element Pictures and its director, Yorgos Lanthimos following The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer.
Colman, already a three time Bafta winner, receives a nomination for Best Actress. Her co-stars Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone are both in the running for Best Supporting Actress.
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga also score Bafta success this morning. They pick up nods for Best Actor and Actress. Cooper receives Film, Directing, Adapted Screenplay and Original music nominations for his work on A Star Is Born. Gaga gets a second nod for Original Music. The film was largely snubbed at the Globes but it did take home the top prizes at the prestigious National Board of Review Awards last night.

After a triumphant Golden Globes, there’s also a chance for Bohemian Rhapsody to secure further success. It is nominated for Best British Film and Actor for Rami Malek along with several nods in the technical categories.
In further good news for Irish talent, Dubliner Barry Keoghan and Kerry’s Jessie Buckley are in the running for the Bafta Rising star award.
