While Moonlight was considered to be the highest competition for Damien Chazelle's La La Land, it has only been given four BAFTA nominations to La La Land's eleven.
The full list of the BAFTA nominees has been announced, right after most of the contenders are still recovering from their Golden Globe hangovers. While at the Globes, Barry Jenkins' emotional drama Moonlight won best picture, it was only granted four BAFTA nominations while La La Land, the new musical from Whiplash director Damien Chazelle, won eleven. Both Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone received nominations for their performance in the film, which also earned Damien Chazelle a nomination for Best Screenplay and another for Best Director.
While Irish actress Ruth Negga was nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star award last week, her name sadly didn't come up on this list of nominees. Despite her Rising Star award and the widespread success of her new film, Loving, neither her or the film are nominated for any of the key BAFTA awards this season, though that isn't slowing down the rumours of an Oscar nom for Negga.
Actress Amy Adams appeared in two films from this past year that received nominations; the sci-fi hit Arrival and the Tom Ford directed drama Nocturnal Animals. Adams herself is nominated for Best Actress for her role in Arrival. Other notable nominees include Meryl Streep for Florence Foster Jenkins, Natalie Portman for Jackie, and Viola Davis for Fences, the film production of the play by August Wilson. The famous Harry Potter franchise proved to be back in full swing, as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was nominated for Outstanding British Film.
