It’s the heart of Irish comedy and celebrates its 30th anniversary this month. The cream of Irish comic talent will turn out to pay tribute to the Comedy Cellar
The Comedy Cellar celebrates 25 years this September with an unbelievably packed show on the 13th of the month.
Comedy in Dublin, it is generally agreed, was a wasteland before Ardal O’Hanlon, Kevin Gildea and Barry Murphy (aka Mr. Trellis), set up camp upstairs in the International Bar in Wicklow Street in 1988.
Tommy Tiernan, David O’Doherty, Jason Byrne, and PJ Gallagher are among the 30 or so comics to perform at the anniversary bash. The show starts at 8pm. Tickets cost €25.
David O’Doherty, after a hectic Edinburgh fringe, returns to Dublin to perform a week-long run of his new show David O’Doherty Will Try To Fix Everything in the Project Arts Centre, East Essex Street. The Winner of the I.F Edinburgh Comedy Award in 2008 (it used to be sponsored by Perrier) is hardly an unknown quantity to Irish audiences at this stage. The “Ryanair James Bond” and “The Kevin McCloud of the Tiny Keyboard” are among the monikers he has attached to himself. He also claims to be a “Former Miss Ireland” and “the offspring of Shannon/Pete Doherty”. The show runs September 15 – 21.
Meanwhile, award winning musical comedy group Dead Cat Bounce host their farewell gig in Vicar Street on September 20. The trio, consisting of members Demian Fox, Shane O’Brien and James Walmsley, began performing together in 2008. The gang made their TV debut in 2009 as part of RTE’s Project Ha Ha. In 2011, they won the People’s Choice Award at the Sydney Comedy Festival. In the past, they have penned moving odes to the sports of golf and rugby as well as to the plight of the humble and much-maligned moustache.
Vicar Street is clearly the place to be this September. Australian comic Adam Hills brings his show ‘Happyism’ to the venue for one night only on Friday, September 27. Hills is one of the most high-profile comics working in Ireland and the UK at the moment. An amputee, he fronted Channel 4’s irreverent evening show as part of their Paralympics coverage last summer.
