Up and coming Dublin promoters move to pastures new. And other stories..
Plus ca change. Subject Events have moved their main operation, Hype, from the Pod as of this month. The move will see the collective reinforce their mint reputation for quality house and techno. Previous spinners include Kevin Saunderson, Derrick Carter and Irish legend Billy Scurry. Next up, a double-whammy of minimalist German Magda and Watergate resident Sebo K at The Button Factory on 30 April.
Next they team up with promoters BigDishGo at Kennedys presenting Steve Rachmad on May 28 before settling with Bodytonic’s Pogo @ Twisted Pepper from July. Their Galactic Beat Club eclectic disco party continues to run in Bia Bar on the first Friday of the month.
The Ballybrack mafia’s two most successful producers have made a recent top five best singles from skruff.com. Chosen by Jonty Skrufff – who runs the industry leading music and news site – Marcus Lambkin, aka Sh*t Robot, now living in Germany, made number one with 'I’ve Got A Feeling'. Meanwhile, former Hot Press dance guru Mark Kavanagh made number five with 'Illogical', his second release on MK Digital.
Expect a surprising but familiar face behind the decks at Kiss The Funk tomorrow night at Kiss The Funk, The Wright Venue, Swords - Take That’s Howard Donald! Prior to the group reforming in 2005, Howard had carved out an alternative career as a respected house DJ and will swap adoring fans for up-for-it clubbers alongside UK stalwart Rob Tissera and Drew Scott.
The new kid on the block of international hard dance, Belfast’s DJ Mog has released his long-awaited debut album Somewhere Inbetween this month. Including the hit tunes 'Searching' and 'Not For Long', the next single 'Feel' features a remix from another Irish newbie making waves in hard dance, Simon Tist.
The album will be available on itunes from April 26, but can currently be bought at www.djdownload.com. Mog will join Fatboy Slim and mouse-headed upcomer Deadmau5 at GiantsPark, Belfast next month. For more info and to hear samples from the album, check www.djmog.com.
Temple Bar record shop All City are giving over some shelf space to Earwiggle, a techno-centric collective of DJs, producers and promoters. The new section will concentrate on deep techno and house with some dubstep. Earwiggle also plan on shipping a top quality Funktion One soundsystem to Andrews Lane on May 02 for Swedish techno vanguard Carl Lekebusch’s set of classic 90s techno, a taster from his Techno Archeology upcoming CD.
The North of Ireland stormed the Irish Dance Music Awards earlier this month with no less than five winner and xx runner up awards coming from artists across the border.
Those who travelled back up there with trophies include Phil Kieran for Best Producer, Japanese Popstars for Best Live Act and Full Tilt Records for Best Label, coming up behind them included veteran DJ Col Hamilton, Lush in Portrush and Planet Love’s PLM Promotions who were runners up in the Best Resident, Best Venue and Best Promoters categories. Another IMDA winner – for Best Newcomer – Lorcan Mak is currently nominated for a very different kind. The 21-year-old producer, DJ and graphic artist has been put forward for president of the Student Union at the National Academy Of Art and Design, where he currently a third year student. A Facebook campaign Lorcan Mak 4 El Presidente, including Lorcan’s Manifesto For Change, is gaining ground with the election taking place on April 29. Get voting!
