Indie-pop electronic merchants Blondmodel on originality, Nelly Furtado covers, and being “too fond” of drink and romance.
How did Blondmodel originate?
Living a couple of doors down from each other means we (Sean and Ste) have been friends since Capri Suns. When I was persuaded to take Leaving Cert Music, we almost began to play songs together in the box-room of our gaffs - wrecking our family’s heads. We then moved onto writing and producing our own stuff, completely self-taught, and with a pinch of luck it came out pretty well.
How did your latest single ‘B L I S S’ come to fruition?
‘B L I S S’ is an emotion that differs from joy and happiness. There’s a certain rarity and sedation to it. You never ask for it, but when it happens, you can feel it pulsing through you. We have a lot of people in our lives to share it with. We’re lucky in that way. The production was made to reflect a cockpit, in a solo shuttle through space. It just brings that warmth and tingle of emotion into play.
We’ve never had any help writing, producing, learning our process or using our equipment, which makes Blondmodel sound more original. Once it’s all from us instrumentally and lyrically, we’re good. It’s just a back-and-forth session of trial and error, which usually ends up in a Nelly Furtado cover.
What are the main themes and influences behind your tracks?

Part of good writing is sticking to what you know. We’re too fond of the drink. We’re too fond of romance. And we get the good and bad out of both. Our influences come from anything and anywhere. Musically, Beach House were the ones who really resonated with us as a unit. Other influences vary from Kanye to Soft Cell. Steven loves old time slow dance music with inexplicable flow. Sean is mad into Mac Miller. If it’s good, that’s all we care about.
What are your plans for 2022?
We’ve got lots on our plate this year, mainly in the form of our debut album Doom, Gloom And Cheap Perfume - out independently on February 18. Our debut headline show will be in The Sound House on February 25. Ideally, we want to move up a level: more writing outside of our bedrooms, and shows outside of Dublin. Send us an owl to get involved!
