US writer James Miller has serious form when it comes to compelling non-fiction books, having co-written – with Pulitzer Prize winning Washington Post critic Tom Shales – Live From New York, a brilliant oral history of Saturday Night Live. His latest book, Powerhouse, is subtitled The Inside Story Of Hollywood’s Creative Artists Agency and does exactly what it says on the tin, providing a riveting insight into the most powerful talent agency in the world.
Indeed, it would probably be quicker to list the influential figures CAA don’t represent, such is its all pervasive influence in the worlds of entertainment and sport. Formed in the mid-’70s by a breakaway group from the William Morris agency led by Mike Ovitz, CAA would go on to not only represent Hollywood’s leading talent, but actively shape the entertainment industry into the 21st century.
Populated by a large cast of A-List figures, and boasting both revealing insight and memorable anecdotes, Powerhouse is one of the non-fiction books of the year.
