The Cabinet is considering a scheme to support off-peak entertainment across the country as a trial commences today.
A new Night-Time Economy Support Scheme is to be brought to the cabinet for consideration by Minister for the Arts Catherine Martin. €2.6m will be allocated to venues and businesses across Irish towns and cities, aiming to increase activity throughout the week and into the evening.
The scheme will finally commence its trial today, with applications open at 1pm to councils in Irish towns and cities who wish to diversify off-peak activities in their pubs, nightclubs, cafes, and other such businesses. Applicants granted funding will be required to host a minimum of four events, with the potential to receive up to €10k each. Councils have until June 24 to submit proposals for consideration.
The trial arrives as the effect of consultation with representatives from Ireland’s night-time economy sectors, such as the Restaurant Association of Ireland and the Licensed Vintners Association. The process will select six towns and cities, with the scheme set to run for two years. Each town or city will be assigned a Night-Time Economy Advisor to aid in assisting with improving night-time footfall.
Off-peak times refer to Monday through Thursday after 6pm, when public activity is less frequent. Funding will be directed toward music, comedy, dance, literature, exhibitions and other such cultural activities, and must invite cultural participation or performance.
Speaking about the scheme, Minister Martin stated, “The establishment of Night-Time Advisors in the six pilot towns and cities will be a significant step towards securing a vibrant and importantly a more sustainable night-time culture for all our citizens.”

Additionally, Minister Martin has approved further funding to support late-night openings of national cultural institutions throughout the summer and early autumn. This will allow visitors and tourists more availability to experience Irish culture and expand the potential for the types of events taking place currently.
This action is a reflection of the ongoing push for government assistance with cultural and night-life sectors after a lengthy, pandemic-induced closure which shut down many local businesses and venues. If the rules and regulations become more workable, businesses will succeed in working with them.
