BritBox UK announced today (August 11) that the streamer has commissioned the Original comedy-drama series, produced by Element Pictures, in association with Fís Eireann/Screen Ireland and ITV Studios, in partnership with RTÉ.
Award-winning playwright and screenwriter Nancy Harris (The Good Karma Hospital, Dates) and acclaimed director Paddy Breathnach (Viva, Rosie) are the creators behind an exciting new eight-part comedy-drama series called The Dry. Set in Dublin, the eight-part original comedy-drama series began shooting on Monday, and will debut exclusively on BritBox UK in 2022.
The series will star Roisin Gallagher (The Fall, Nowhere Special), Ciarán Hinds (Game of Thrones, The Terror), Pom Boyd (Vanity Fair, Frank of Ireland), Siobhán Cullen (Origin, The Limehouse Golem), Moe Dunford (The Dig, Vikings) and newcomer Adam Richardson, and "celebrates the joyful chaos and dark absurdities of family life in a series that is all about recovery," according to a statement.
Gallagher plays Shiv Sheridan, who returns home to Dublin after years of partying in London. When she arrives back on Irish shores, she is sober and full of good intentions – but coming home to her family makes staying on "the dry" much harder than she anticipated. The series will follow Shiv and her family as she attempts to navigate this new phase of her life in addition to the issues all of them don't want to face.

The series will be executive produced by Emma Norton and Michael Dawson for Element Pictures (the company responsible for titles such as Normal People, and Yorgos Lanthimos' The Favourite), alongside company founders Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe and writer Nancy Harris.
“I’m over the moon to be working with Element Pictures, Paddy Breathnach and this spectacular cast of insanely talented Irish actors," said Harris. "It’s a dream collaboration and I can’t wait to bring the BritBox audience this family comedy-drama which pivots on the oxymoron of giving up drink in Ireland.”
