Vertigo Releasing has acquired the US, UK and Australia rights to the cocaine comedy which has grossed over €1m in the Republic of Ireland.
The Young Offenders, the hit Irish cocaine-bust comedy is set for international release. A smash hit here in Ireland – where it generated over €1 million at the box office – it has been picked up by Vertigo Releasing for distribution in the US and Canada, the UK, and Australia and New Zealand.
Written and directed by Peter Foott (best know to date for RTÉ’s The Republic Of Telly), the feature debut stars newcomers Alex Murphy and Chris Walley – who featured in Hot Press recently – alongside Hilary Rose ('The Republic Of Telly) and stand-up comedian PJ Gallagher (Naked Camera).
Inspired by Ireland’s biggest cocaine seizure of €440 million off the coast of Cork in 2007, the film follows two inner-city teenagers as they embark on a 160km road trip on stolen bikes, in the hope of finding the missing bales of cocaine.
Peter Foott and Julie Ryan of Vico Films produced the movie, with XYZ handling North American sales. The deal was completed by Ed Caffrey of Vertigo Releasing, Peter Foott of Vico Films and Nate Bolotin of XYZ Films.

Rupert Preston and Ed Caffrey of Vertigo Releasing were enthusiastic about the global potential of what is a hilarious comedy. “The Young Offenders is one of the funniest and freshest films we’ve seen in years,” they said in a statement, "We’re thrilled to be working with Peter to bring the film to a UK and international audience.”
Peter Foott is naturally hugely pleased with doing the deal. “The cast, crew and myself are delighted!” he said. "Having our film reach such a huge audience is incredible and we are so happy it’s Vertigo who are taking us on this journey.”
