Flynn will perform the piece alongside students from the Guitar Training Centre in Dún Laoghaire on August 20.
Acclaimed Irish composer Dave Flynn has announced that he will premiere his latest composition online on August 20.
Titled Dún Laoghaire Guitars, the composition is the result of Flynn’s stint as one of three 2020 Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Musicians-in-Residence.
He will perform the composition alongside students from the Dún Laoghaire Guitar Training Centre, a local music school.
Flynn himself is a highly-regarded guitarist: He's won numerous awards, earned praise from the New York Times and had his work performed at MoMa and Ireland's National Concert Hall.
He’s also the conductor of the Irish Memory Orchestra, which plays classical and Irish traditional music without the aid of sheet music.

This residency is not Flynn’s only connection to Dún Laoghaire — he grew up in nearby Dublin. In a press release, Flynn said “When I was a teenager, I regularly took trips into Dún Laoghaire town.
“The sounds I heard by the harbour and train station formed a musical picture in my mind that I vowed one day to turn into a piece of music. That day arrived when I was appointed Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown’s Musician-in-Residence.”
Una Power of the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said that “it is so exciting to have a musician of Dave Flynn’s calibre as the first Musician-in-Residence for 2020.”
“Sustaining, supporting, and growing our artistic culture in the County is hugely important,” she added, “so to have the involvement of young musicians from throughout the County through the Dún Laoghaire Guitar School is absolutely fantastic.”
On August 20 at 7:00 PM, visit the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and Music Network’s social media channels to hear Flynn perform his latest piece.
