Fans of the hit comedy Derry Girls have had a wild few days.

Actor/comedian Tommy Tiernan, who plays Erin’s dad Gerry, said Sunday that he believed the show would reach its end after the upcoming third season.

“This is [the] last series, I think. As far as I know this is the very last series”, he said during his appearance on Jason Manford’s Absolute Radio show.

His statement sent the rumour mill into full effect, and many fans took to Twitter to voice their devastation.

Luckily, it may not be time to panic just yet. Amid the drama, the show’s creator Lisa McGee sent out her own tweet debunking the rumour. While she’s not sure what’s next, there are no plans to end Derry Girls after this season as of now. Clare actress Nicola Coughlan chimed in with her own tweet, saying, "To calm your fears do not believe everything you read! Lisa is writing Series 3 as we speak please do not panic".

McGee revealed in January in a Red Carpet News interview that she’d been involved in discussions about a potential film version of the sitcom.

"That's definitely something we're talking about and something I'd like to explore,” she said. “It's just if the story is right. So, it's about me figuring all that out at some point!"

We'll just have to wait and see what's in store for the show in the upcoming months.
