A potential star-in-the-making, Emily Jean Flack has released a brand new live video of the title track from her EP Throwing Shapes – and it is a winner all the way...
Emily Jean Flack has released a new video – and we’re loving it here in Hot Press towers!
The video is for the title track of her current EP, Throwing Shapes and it comes 'Live from Riddels'.
Originally from Canada, Emily Jean is the daughter of Denise Flack, who was a member of the ground-breaking Celtic pop band Leahy. Emily moved to Ireland to study for a masters in Traditional Irish Music at the University of Limerick.
"Her passion for traditional Irish music has led to her most accomplished work yet,” we are told, "showcasing her gorgeously pure vocals and the Celtic music she has grown up with, whilst injecting inventive electronic textures – a genre-spanning mix which defies expectation and delivers on every level.”
That is a sentiment with which Hot Press can readily concur. Indeed, one of the most striking aspects of the exhilarating live video is the extent to which it effortlessly showcases both the fine vocals of Emily Jean Flack and the wonderful musicianship of her backing band.
Here was the pitch as it came into Hot Press:

"Her latest live video for the title track of her recent EP 'Throwing Shapes' showcases Emily at her absolute best, with her stunning band in tow. Flawless vocals over genre-defying music, full of emotion, with perfectly arranged instrumentation, reminiscent of Bon Iver's epic 2012 live session for iTunes.”
Have a look and make your own judgement, but let’s just say that we are happy to endorse the sentiment!
The EP Throwing Shapes was produced in Belfast by Pete Wallace, and mixed by three-time Grammy Award winning producer/mixer David Bottrill (Tool; Peter Gabriel). Throwing Shapes, by Emily Jean Flack, also features guest performances by true stars in the firmament of Irish folk music: whistle and flute player Brian Finnegan from the band Flook and guitarist Marty Barry.
