The handmaiden, a Korean film by Park Chan-Wook, will air in Irish movie theaters April 14, bringing you a story about romance, manipulation and betrayal.
In the 1930’s, Nam Sook-Hee, a pickpocket, goes into service of Japanese heiress Hideko, who lives with her uncle. Her task is to convince Hideko into marrying Fujiwara who is a con artist fixed on stealing away Hideko’s heritage. Fujiwara has hired Sook-Hee to infiltrate and persuade Hideko, but the two women become lovers. Whether it is true love or personal gain, however, is unclear.
The movie has received several prizes as well as nominations and will be nationwide available April 14. The special director’s cut will be shown in a limited amount of theaters.
