The Soft Boy Records producer has enlisted some of the best names in Irish hip-hop and electronic, including Alex Gough.
Cork native and Soft Boy Records producer Gaptoof has announced a new mixtape, due for release on March 5th, featuring some of Ireland's most renowned producers.
THE SPACE TAPE was inspired by Gaptoof's weekly Instagram Live beat battles, which the producer began during lockdown. “The goal was to inspire producers and musicians like myself to stay motivated in a time where it can be hard to be consistent in your work," Gaptoof explained in a statement. "It gives people something to look forward to and something they can work towards. A real sense of community has been developed, keeping people connected through what they do at a time when everything is so disconnected.”
Taking a backseat in order to host, Gaptoof sets a sample at the start of each week and different producers from all over the country do their best to “flip it” – make a beat from the sample. The beats that the participating producers make are then submitted to Gaptoof, who plays them back on his Instagram Live, offering advice and opinion on each track.
Three producers are crowned the winners every week, with the judging process being a collaborative decision between the spectators and Gaptoof. Through this discussion, an agreement is reached on who deserves a place in the top three. Those who found themselves among the winners over the last six weeks now make up the wonderfully eclectic roster for THE SPACE TAPE. Including Soft Boy Records' own Brién and Wastefellow, as well as Alex Gough, Ward, and many more, all proceeds from the mixtape will go to MASI (Movement of Asylum Seekers Ireland).
