Between near-misses involving oncoming mobile libraries and a post-9/11 funding collapse, it’s taken six years for Shimmy Marcus’ drugs caper to make the transition from award winning screenplay to theatrical release.

Headrush is an exceptionally buzzy entry in the pharmaceutical swag-bag sub-genre. The frenzied action sees lovable outsiders Gavin Kelty and Wuzza Conlon (Last Days Of Dublin) hit Amsterdam with a Big Score, a pissed off ex-girlfriend and a bag of cocaine in their sights.
Along the way they encounter a transvestite drug lord (Huey Morgan of Fun Lovin' Criminals, demonstrating his showgirl legs),BP Fallon’s new-age dope peddler and Steven Berkoff at his most, well, Steven Berkoffian. Engaging mayhem follows.
I'm glad to see the author of the triumphant alt-doc Aidan Walsh: Master Of The Universe living up to his promise. Headrush is, as Wittgenstein might have said, all that the title may be. Well, if he wasn’t dead, he might.
Running Time 85mins. Cert 16. Opens June 24th
