We wanted to like Hot Tub Time Machine a lot more than we did.
A John Cusack comedy that transports the star back to the eighties, on paper, it read like a super clever meta-movie; John Cusack returns to the era of John Cusack. In practise it’s just another gross out comedy in which three guys – Messrs. Cusack, Duke and Robinson - work out various mid-life crises.
Don’t be fooled by the Chevy Chase cameo and the superficial wackiness. The sci-fi device of the title and the nods to other time travel vessels – Back to the Future’s Crispin Glover is a running gag and supporting character – is not enough to distinguish this from such other misfiring testosterone blasts as The Goods.
Note to all –referring to The Butterfly Effect as a way of explaining your film is not good writing; referencing the eighties is not innately hilarious and a bad pun around the words Motley Crue is as lazy a closing gambit as we’ve ever seen.
