It’s hard to believe that this largely dull, over long, only sporadically amusing comedy was written by Alexander Payne (Sideways).
Adam Sandler maybe infinitely more appealing than his occasional cohort Rob Schneider but that doesn’t mean he isn’t no-brow. Mr. Sandler may be well capable of producing excellent knockabout fare (Little Nicky), crowd-pleasing rom-coms (The Wedding Singer) and the odd brilliant performance (Punch Drunk Love) but that doesn’t mean he has lost touch with his roots. Sadly his roots involve sugary gross-out comedies such as Big Daddy, Mr. Deeds and now, I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry.
The pitch runs thus – Adam Sandler and Kevin James are two bracing heterosexual New York fire-fighters who get married to ensure that Mr. James’ children are cared for should he perish in the line of duty. An investigation into the veracity of their partnership soon follows with predictable consequences. They mince about. Steve Buscemi, looking in to the case, declares that their garbage is not “very gay”. And so on.
