The show is being financed by The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI).
Cardboard Gangsters was the highest grossing Irish film of 2017. It was also critically acclaimed, earning a rare 100 per cent rating on critic aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes based off 17 reviews.
The film also picked up an Irish Film and Television Award (IFTA) for Best Actor for co-writer and star John Connors. During his acceptance speech he criticised the Irish Film Board (now Screen Ireland) for not supporting the film.
