Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist has died in his birth city of Stockholm after a long battle with lung cancer. He was 56 years old.
The actor was best known for his role in the Millennium series, the original film adaptation of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy of the same name. He also played the lead villain in both Mission: Impossible-- Ghost Protocol and John Wick.
"On behalf of Michael Nyqvist’s representatives and family, it is with deep sadness that I can confirm that our beloved Michael, one of Sweden’s most respected and accomplished actors, has passed away quietly surrounded by family after a year long battle with lung cancer,” said the actor's representative in a statement on Tuesday. “Michael’s joy and passion were infectious to those who knew and loved him. His charm and charisma were undeniable, and his love for the arts was felt by all who had the pleasure of working with him.”
Before his death, Nyqvist wrapped filming Hunter Killer, in which he starred opposite Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman, and Kursk, opposite Colin Firth and Matthias Schoenaerts. The films are set to be released in 2017 and April 2018, respectively.
The actor is survived by his wife Catharina Ehrnrooth and children Ellen and Arthur.
