From the team that brought you Orange is the New Black comes GLOW, the new Netflix comedy series about the glitz, glam, and gore of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling show.
Based on the real-life show from the 80's, the comedy tells the fictional story of a group of unique, misfit, down-and-out female actors who resort to competing in a women's wrestling circuit to pay their bills. Through the competition, they reclaim stereotypes, gain a sense of empowerment, and discover a supportive community of fellow women.
Part of what makes GLOW so empowering is that the actors actually do their own stunts. The cast underwent give weeks of intensive training before production. “It was really inspiring to watch all the other girls, and myself, learning all this stuff that no one has any experience with,” says Alison Brie (Community, Mad Men, BoJack Horseman), who plays the show's main character Ruth Wilder. “It can be kind of dangerous and it’s all a little scary, and no one ever hesitated for a second. Everybody was so gung-ho.”
Like the cast, the crew is dominated by women. The show was created by Liz Flahive (Nurse Jackie, Homeland), who also wrote for all ten episodes; eight of the ten episodes were directed by women, and the majority of writers were women.
“This whole job has been totally female-forward, and I’ve never worked with so many women at once,” Brie says. “It’s so f’ing cool, and because of the nature of what we’re doing."
After all, the show is about more than smashing about in the wrestling ring; it's about smashing stereotypes

“I think they’re going to come for the wrestling, but they’re going to stay for the characters and the story,” Brie says. “It’s so interesting, and it’s very complex.”
GLOW also stars Britt Baron, Ellen Wong, and Betty Gilpin.
