Northern Irish actor Jamie Dornan has taken the derision of Wild Mountain Thyme on the chin, laughing off Ireland's reaction to the Hollywood trailer and abysmal take on the country's accent.

Dornan stars in the new film alongside Londoner Emily Blunt, Jon Hamm and Christopher Walken.

The former Fifty Shades of Gray star and Blunt play star-crossed lovers in the romantic drama set in Mullingar in County Westmeath (despite showing Clare's Cliffs of Moher in the trailer...).

Their accents in the trailer, released in November, prompted much mockery from many Irish viewers, but Dornan felt it was a typically Irish response to ridicule an American film's take on the nation.

Speaking on The Graham Norton Show's New Year's Eve special, the actor said the response was typical of self-deprecating Irish humour.

"I thought the reaction was funny. I'm from Ireland and our currency is taking the piss, so it's rare to put something out there and not have the piss taken. I'm all for it."

The film, written and directed by John Patrick Shanley, tells a love story set against the landscapes of rural Ireland. The project is based on Shanley's play, originally titled Outside Mullingar.

Dornan and Blunt play Anthony and Rosemary, whose families are caught up in a long-standing argument over a hotly-contested area of land that separates their two farms.

"John Patrick Shanley has a kookiness to his work," 38-year-old Dornan said of Shanley's script.

"His are not normal linear movies, they are all a bit heightened and a bit odd, but the words are beautiful."

37-year-old A Quiet Place actress Blunt also praised the writing, saying:

"When we read the script, we thought it was so bewitching and completely unique. It is odd, lyrical and romantic so we are just excited for people to see it because it is so uplifting, and it certainly sweeps you away to a magical world. It is just a joy."
