While a second season of the Netflix documentary Making a Murderer was already confirmed in 2016, no actual release date has been announced since then. Netflix now gives an update on when more episodes can be expected.
The second season of the crime documentary about Steven Avery will, according to Netflix, air later this year.
Filmed over a 10-year period, the documentary follows the case of Avery who served an 18 year prison sentence after he was falsely accused and convicted sexual assault and attempt murder. After being released in 2003, he was again convicted for murdering Teresa Halbach and is currently in prison on a life sentence.
When it first aired on Netflix, Making a Murderer instantly became a huge success and in 2016 a second season following the case was announced.
Although when speaking to USA Today, Netflix Vice President Cindy Holland confirmed that there will be new episodes later this year, she couldn’t be specific about a release date: “The story is still ongoing, so you will see new episodes coming sometime this year as the story continues to unfold. We don’t know when for sure new episodes will be coming.”

She added that not giving an official date would give the filmmakers of the series, Laura Riccardi and Moira Demos, enough time to shoot the material they need to tell the story.
“Laura and Moira are [in Manitowoc] shooting regularly and working on what the right story is to tell in the next set, so we’re deferring to them on when it will be ready.” She continued: “Very few people inside of Netflix actually know the details of what we’re getting because we’re wanting to keep it really under wraps and it is an ongoing case so we’re trying to be sensitive to that.”
The second season of Making a Murderer can be expected to follow the recent events after Avery’s conviction. In 2016 Avery’s lawyer, Kathleen Zeller, filed a new appeal to reach a retesting of critical pieces of evidence in order to overturn Avery’s 2007 conviction.
