We’ll attempt to prove our nerd cred by distinguishing this one from the anime you know about.
This year is pretty big for Pokemon, which celebrates the twentieth anniversary for the bug-catching franchise. In addition to Pokemon Go, we can expect to see new portable games, Pokemon: Sun and Moon, release this November, introducing a new bevy of Poke-species, as well as new mechanics.
To round out the milestone year, The Pokemon Company will release an online series of web shorts called Pokemon Generations, which celebrates the games’ long history. Each episode will run three to five minutes each, with episodes released weekly from 16 September to 23 December. The episodes will cover the memorable moments of each game. What separates this from the long-running Pokemon anime is that the ongoing series, while taking the concept and setting of the games, is a distinct entity with its own story and original characters.
This isn’t the first anime to directly adapt from the games. Pokemon Origin took the original Red and Blue games (Red and Green in Japan), and adapted the greatest hits of the player character’s adventure into a series of four episodes. It proved a success, which is likely why we will get the new anime.
