A virtual viewing room kicking into action yesterday
The Irish Film Institute have launched the IFI Player; a virtual viewing room where people can access a wealth of footage from the Irish Film Archive, instantly, from anywhere around the world.
Starting out with over 1,200 hours of material from as far back as 1910, IFI aims to preserve and make available Irelands national collection of moving images, covering all major historic and political events, thus forming and expanding an invaluable resource for Irish historic and cultural exploration, while opening up the world of Irish film to the rest of the globe. The collection includes the very first pieces of Irish animation, home movies, newsreels, travelogues, feature films, public information films and documentaries, so you can cancel you’re Netflix subscription right away.
“The IFI Player is a ground-breaking development for the IFI, as it allows us to fulfil our mission to make our collections from the IFI Irish Film Archive available to a much broader audience base," explained IFI Director Ross Keane. "Through the IFI Player, audiences across the country and around the world will have the opportunity to access this rich heritage online, and from the comfort of their own homes. It is a highly significant step for us and we look forward to building on the content over the coming months and years. It will truly democratise national and international access to our collections.”
The contents of the IFI Player include works of The Gael-Linn Collection, The Horgan Brothers Collection, The O’Kalem Collection, The Radharc Collection, The Father Delaney Collection, The Bord Fáilte Film Collection, The Department of Foreign Affairs Collection, The Desmond Egan Collection, The Monsignor Reid Collection and a whole lot more.
